Murray Micklberg was born to a poor but honest sharecropper and his wife. He lived and grew up with his parents and 11 siblings in and around Philadelphia, Mississippi in the early forties. Wrong! The Micklberg family in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania was known for baking, which Murray's father even engaged in among other successful pursuits. Born in the late forties with one slightly older sister, he got lucky to meet Frank Morgan in the early seventies. Frank, who passed away in 2007, was the first saxophonist or other musician for that matter, who had the integrity and chutzpah to get through Murray's thick noggin about how to play jazz. Murray could have learned earlier about the importance of practice from other musical luminaries. Their eventual impact on his life became more personally relevant after Frank fortunately woke him up in his jazz workshop in the Germantown section of Philadelphia.
